A killer marketing message is one of the two main components to market your business successfully.

What Is a Killer Marketing Message?

A killer marketing message is a short phrase, usually under ten words, that expresses the essence of the value you offer to your ideal customers.  Once you have created your killer marketing message, you should use it everywhere to make it easy for your ideal clients to find you in the midst of a crowded market.

Your message needs to be direct and compelling so that your ideal customer can self-identify with your message.

Why Do You Need a Killer Marketing Message?

Glad you asked!  How is your ideal customer going to find you if you are not speaking to him/her directly in your marketing efforts?  If a homebuyer finds your company online, can they identify with your defined client base?  Or is your message on your website a generic “green builder” that everyone else is claiming?  Does your message set you apart to reach the ideal customers you want to work with?  If you have not clearly defined your ideal customer, don’t worry, here’s a great tool to help you Identify Your Ideal Customer.

What Makes a Killer Marketing Message?

There are several key factors that make your marketing message outstanding. A killer marketing message:

  • Is specific, intriguing, and concise.
  • Establishes your professionalism and credibility.
  • Clearly states WHAT you do, WHOM you serve, and the BENEFIT they get by working with you.
  • Gets the desired response: “Hey, that’s me!” (and become your customer) or “That’s not me, but it sure sounds like my friend John!” (and refer you to others).
  • A great message is a refined statement that speaks directly to your ideal customer and attracts them to you.

How Do You Create Your Own Killer Marketing Message?

Here’s an example: “We build green homes for first-time homebuyers.” This is a very simple seven-word statement that clarifies WHAT this company does (build), WHOM they serve (first-time homebuyers) and what BENEFIT customers get from working with them (a green home).  People care about what they reap from working with you, not the other way around.

To create your killer marketing message focus on the essentials.  Be clear on WHAT is it that you do and WHOM you do it for, and what BENEFIT your customers obtain by working with you.
